Crop Tunnels

Crop tunnels or high tunnels as they are sometimes called, are designed to provide early and late season protection in addition to creating a better growing environment during the production period for a variety of different crops.

Blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, vegetables, cut flowers, forest seedlings and perennials all experience improved quality and production when protected from the detrimental effects of frost, wind, rain and cold.

Following the lead of some European countries, we also expect to see them used for dwarf apple, cherry and other tree fruits, allowing producers to bring their crops to market both earlier and later, as well as increasing overall production and the quality.

16 to 28 foot wide tunnels on 4 to 8 foot high anchor platforms are the most commonly used sizes. Hoops are bent to size in your fields. Crossties are used for extra wide tunnels and can be used to support monorail carts for harvesting.

Strawberries grown under BGBL Crop Tunnels kick off an earlier marketing season when higher prices are usually received. Raspberries reportedly have an extended shelf life at the market as a result of protection from the rain.

Cut flowers, forest seedlings and ornamental nursery crops are protected from wind and rain while being hardened off or needing dormancy control or to have tender new growth protected prior to shipping.

BGBL Crop Tunnels protect blueberry blossoms susceptible to frost and needing moderate weather for successful pollination. As well, berries are ready for market earlier.
